| Breaking News |  | Friday, June 1st, 1973: Horlen Nabs AL #1 Pitcher Award
It was a very good month for Joe Horlen in May. The 35-year-old veteran starter for the Chicago White Sox outpitched everybody -- young and old -- to claim the American League Pitcher of the Month award earlier today.
Horlen ran up a 5-0 record in his 6 starts during the month. In 49.1 innings he fanned 17 and recorded a 2.01 ERA.
Thus far this season, Horlen has worked 72 innings with 24 strikeouts en route to a 7-0 record and a 2.38 ERA. |

There's nothing like being in the prime of your baseball career -- and playing like it. Just ask Ron Lolich, the Chicago right fielder, who swung a sweet bat all week to not only aid his team, but also pick up the American League Player of the Week honors.
Lolich piled up 12 hits in 26 at-bats, 3 home runs and 7 RBIs while hitting .462.
During the 1973 season Lolich has hit .303 with 9 home runs and 22 RBIs. He has played in 44 games and scored 29 times. |

Brian Downing is respected by most Chicago White Sox fans for his no-frills style of play. The 22-year-old left fielder went about his business with vigor last week to grab the American League Player of the Week honors.
He compiled a .417 average (10-24) with 3 home runs, 16 RBIs and 6 runs scored.
In 38 games Downing is hitting .286 this season for the White Sox with 38 hits, 4 home runs, 29 RBIs, 20 walks, .369 OBP and has scored 21 runs.
