| Breaking News |  | Thursday, September 14th, 1972: Gibson Pitches Cardinals to Shutout Win Bob Gibson had the Montreal Expos dancing to his tune today with a sparkling 8-0 shutout performance for the St. Louis Cardinals. He gave up 5 hits and collected 7 walks and 9 strikeouts.
Montreal hitters were bewildered throughout the game by his delivery.
The opposing manager said, "When you face a guy who hides the ball like he does, it takes a couple of at-bats to try to find his release point. We just never figured him out."

After the game, the team's medical staff said that the 22-year-old starting pitcher had suffered dead arm syndrome while throwing a pitch. It's estimated that he will be out 1-2 weeks.

"Holtzman certainly pitched a strong game against us today. He was in a groove, throwing everything for strikes. Throwing hard. Changing speeds."
The Pittsburgh starter tamed the Montreal Expos 2-0 with a 3-hit shutout, finishing the game with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks in a sharp outing.
"I enjoy facing a team like that where I can get an out on one, two or three pitches," Holtzman said. "It gives me a chance to be a lot more aggressive."
