Friday, June 1st, 1973: Houston's Walker - Chosen May's Best in NL
Luke Walker's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 4-1 in May, the 29-year-old Houston hurler has been named National League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 28 in 44.2 innings, logged an ERA of 2.22 and allowed opponents to hit .194 against him.

Up to now Walker has recorded a record of 6-3. In 10 starts he has fanned 48 batters in 66.1 innings with a 2.85 ERA.
Saturday, May 26th, 1973: Niekro Puts Spell on Houston
Phil Niekro of the Pittsburgh Pirates was masterful today, pitching a 5-hit 2-0 shutout against the Houston Astros and giving his bullpen a rest by going the distance.

According to his manager, "He had command of every ball and every pitch... great location, too." Niekro had 3 strikeouts and issued 1 walk in an impressive outing.

So far in 1973 Niekro has compiled a 3-6 record with a 3.49 ERA.
Wednesday, May 23rd, 1973: Bad News for Houston, Wynn Injured
After the end of today's game between Houston and Cincinnati, Jimmy Wynn skipped the clubhouse and headed straight for the doctor's office. After he was removed from the game as a precaution after running the bases, the Astros had their worst fears confirmed when it turned out to be more serious. The right fielder will miss at least 2 weeks with a strained thigh muscle.

To date this season Wynn is hitting .291 with 7 home runs.
