It's done by the great and the not-so-great. There are times when an average pitcher will briefly be glorified by this achievement. It is not an honor reserved totally for the great pitchers. Today at Arlington Stadium, Dennis Martinez of the Rangers reveled in the glory of a no-hitter. Today he was the best he could be. He held California hitless and beat them 4-0.
One of the Angels told reporters after the game, "Everything was working for him. When that happens, everything is going your way. He was in command."
Martinez rung up 4 strikeouts, issued 1 walk and faced only 29 hitters in his historic outing.
After the game in the Texas locker room, he spoke to reporters. "I really got nervous in the last inning. I knew I had a chance at a no-hitter. It was hard to stay calm and concentrate. Thank goodness for my catcher. He told me to just concentrate on hitting his glove. He would do all of the thinking."
So far this season Martinez has a record of 15-6 with 100 strikeouts and 44 walks in 182.2 innings and a 2.02 ERA. | | Thursday, September 16th, 1976: Montgomery Shuts out Angels Monty Montgomery of the Kansas City Royals really zeroed in on California hitters at Royals Stadium, blanking them 1-0 on 6 hits. Montgomery struck out 2, and gave up 2 walks in defeating the Angels.
Checking out his stats for the year, Montgomery has racked up 15 wins and 11 losses in 32 starts, 3.72 ERA and struck out 72 batters in 225 innings. | | | Injuries | | Player | Injury | Out for... | Disabled List Status | | P Eddie Bane | torn tricep muscle | 2 months | On DL, eligible for return (60-day DL) | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 88-69, .561 PCT | | Position in Division | 2nd, 7.0 GB | | Record at home | 47-32, .595 PCT | | Record on the road | 41-37, .526 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 12-9, .571 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 28-21, .571 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 27-21, .563 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 61-48, .560 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 7-3, .700 PCT | | Record in April | 10-9, .526 PCT | | Record in May | 19-13, .594 PCT | | Record in June | 12-14, .462 PCT | | Record in July | 16-11, .593 PCT | | Record in August | 15-13, .536 PCT | | Record in September | 16-9, .640 PCT |
