Tuesday, April 25th, 1972: Powell Gets #300
Baltimore's outstanding first baseman Boog Powell joined the 300 Club today at Memorial Stadium with a booming blast in the Orioles win over the Royals. They topped Kansas City 6-2.

On his milestone day Powell had 1 hit in 4 at-bats with 1 RBI and 1 run scored.

Tongue-in-cheek he told the press, "Don't tell me when I get close to the next milestone. Just tell me after I reach it. It will be easier to hit that way."

Powell has a career .264 average with 1521 hits, 221 doubles, 15 triples, 300 home runs, 992 RBIs and scored 790 runs to date.

Thursday, April 13th, 1972: Yastrzemski Reaches 2000 Milestone
Boston's Carl Yastrzemski got the standing ovation -- but the Cleveland Indians got the win.
It was a historic day at Fenway Park II. A day when Yastrzemski notched hit #2000 of his career. The fans went wild when he did. Even the Indians fans applauded.

The Red Sox first baseman went 3-4 in a losing cause as Cleveland spoiled the party with the 7-2 victory.

In the postgame interview, a downhearted Yastrzemski told the media, "We lost -- It's not about individual accomplishments -- we lost."

When pressed further, he admitted his pride in reaching the 2000-hit mark, "A lot of great players never get there. I'm proud, but I would be happier if we had won."

Checking out his career figures, Yastrzemski has played in 1908 games with a .283 batting average. Among his 2002 hits are 277 home runs. He also has scored 1060 runs, stolen 99 bases and driven in 1038 runs.
